Fremantle Arts Centre

Fremantle Arts Centre's long history makes it a classic landmark. Built by convicts in the 1860's, it has gone from lunatic asylum to a women's shelter to a World War Two billet.

By Maryam El-Malak

Today it is Fremantle's premier arts centre and one of the leading arts organisations in Australia, renowned for hosting contemporary exhibitions, summer music concerts, and art workshops.

Its characterful limestone walls and gothic architecture juxtapositions the contemporary art inside. Since 1973, it has hosted exhibitions often representing Fremantle and its heritage via print, painted works and multi-media pieces. New shows emerge every spring and summer that are free to the public, with some special ticketed events, with FAC now home to over 1500 archival pieces of art.

Canvas café effuses charm with its relaxed atmosphere and delicious seasonal menu in a secluded leafy courtyard.

From coffee and cakes to more substantial snacks and brunch plates, it is irresistible during any season. Also fully licenced, the café is a tranquil spot post gallery wander to reflect on the art over a glass of wine or beer.

Next door, its shop, FOUND, sells original artisan pieces from WA artists in ceramics, jewellery, textiles and prints, plus books and botanical perfumery. While in private side rooms of the building, workshops in disciplines that include painting, printmaking, photography, creative writing, and ceramics are run by professional artists for adults and kids.

Come springtime, the Inner Courtyard and Front Garden provide the optimal setting for concerts and events. Sunday afternoons find the South Lawn of FAC filled with groups enjoying a curated lineup of musicians in their Sunday Music series from October until March. Bring your own picnic and bag a drink from the onsite bar for an afternoon soaking up the sun. Other annual events include their December Bazaar showcasing WA's Best Maker's Market, selling handmade WA-designed products. While Crafternoons are afternoon sessions of craft and conversation in FAC's Inner Courtyard.
