Nieuw Ruin
Focusing on weird wines and a nostalgic take on bar food, Nieuw Ruin goes beyond being a typical neighbourhood bar.
On the drinks menu, an eclectic range of international craft beer, including local WA labels Outside and Rocky Ridge, and an extensive list of Australian wines from all corners of the continent play to any palate.
Equally, cocktails should not be forgotten. Here it's a clipped menu with a focus on creative combinations. Just choose your taste – something spritzy, sour or fresh. Based on an Old Cuban, April Sun begins with rum, then is topped with sparkling wine and a house-made tincture of tequila and chilli and strawberry shrub. For a little more spice, Tommy Tijuana blends tequila, mezcal, dry vermouth, red peppers and BBQ bitters to get your evening started. Food comes from Head Chef Christophe Mannon-Bakaj via light bar bites: charcuterie and cheese plates, marinated anchovies and sardines, oysters and scallops make up the food menu, along with shared plates like charred broccoli and wagyu carpaccio.
The open plan bar splits the venue into two sections, with a bar lounge on one side and a more traditional seat/table arrangement overlooking the working kitchen. Custom-designed furniture, a suspended timber ceiling, and bamboo plantings add natural touches complimenting the flow of bringing the outside in with tables in the front terrace overlooking Bannister Street the best for an afternoon lounging.
Come Sunday afternoons for live music that kicks off from 4pm, with regular one-off events and booze brand tastings popping up on the patio.
